PLUS ONLINE SAFETY GUIDE

Not sure how safe the internet is?

  • Has someone said something to you that has made you feel uncomfortable, angry or just plain embarrassed?

  • Has someone you have been entering conversations with over the internet pushed you for private information (phone number, address etc)?

If you have questions like the ones above then you might like to consider reading through the information that follows.

The internet is a great tool for keeping in touch with friends, looking up information and also just for fun with loads of games and quizzes you can take part in. Unfortunately however, not everyone who uses the internet has this in mind when they go online. There are those out there who use the internet for doing nasty things such as cyber bullying or even people who use the internet for doing illegal things. Thankfully these people are quite low in numbers but as a responsible internet user it is up to you to be aware of the problems these types of people can pose.

The biggest problem in using the internet socially now is that of cyber bullying. The problem with cyber bullying is that quite often you can be bullying someone almost entirely accidentally! As you are not able to judge how the person you are speaking to is reacting to what you are saying it can be very easy for you to go too far with something you have said and for them to be upset by it.

There are therefore some very useful guidelines to follow that can prevent you accidentally bully others and also for you to follow if you think you are personally being bullied online. The following websites offer excellent help with these things for you and your parents:
